Review: Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore

Are you a self-professed…
a) bookworm
b) librarian
c) bookstore frequenter
d) booklover of any sort?

If you fit into any of those categories, you must read this book. I mean it. I will make you.

(Just kidding)

Summary from Goodreads:
The Great Recession has shuffled Clay Jannon away from life as a San Francisco web design drone and into the aisles of Mr. Penumbras 24-Hour Bookstore. But after a few days on the job, Clay discovers that the store is more curious than either its name or its gnomic owner might suggest. The customers are few and they never seem to buy anything- instead they check-out large volumes from strange corners of the store. Suspicious Clay engineers an analysis of the clienteles behavior, seeking help from his various talented friends. But when they bring their findings to Mr. Penumbra, they discover the bookstore’s secrets extend far beyond its walls. Rendering with irresistible brio and dazzling intelligence, Robin Sloan’s Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore you have to enter and never want to leave.

Ah, Mr. Penumbras 24 Hour Bookstore. Robin Sloan created a brilliant little world in this book that felt so real. As you might guess, the book revolves around Clay, who is hired as a night clerk in the store. The store receives these strange customers in the middle of the night. But even weirder is when Penumbra suddenly disappears. There’s something underground going on here, but you are going to have to read it to find out.

The world building is fantastic. The book isn’t that long, so maybe try and savor it. (That is, if you have the willpower.)

Kat, Clay, and Penumbra were among the strongest characters in the book. I don’t remember so much about Clay’s two roommates; they weren’t that special. But I’m forgiving.

Review: Don’t Look Back by Jennifer L. Armentrout

My memories were dangerous but they were also the key to the truth.

Sam and Cassie both disappeared together, but only one of them returns. But although Sam has returned, there is not much of a celebration. Because while she is there, her memories are not. All she has is the evidence of her trauma; she is covered in bruises and blood and has suffered a complex concussion that has given her temporary amnesia. She tries to reconnect with who she is told were her friends, her boyfriend, and her parents, but she comes to realize that nobody can really be trusted. To make matters worse, threatening notes begin finding their way into her room and her locker. Everyone starts to think she is the murderer; but is she? Can she even trust herself?

And, excuse my language, but holy mother of plot twists. Get ready for an unexpected ending. I cannot even tell you guys how much I adored this book! I need more Jennifer L. Armentrout books in my life.

My rating system, as you will see below, is out of 10 stars. However, I reserve a half star in case I think a book deserves it due to losing a star or so in another category. As always, my reviews are 100% honest and spoiler- free. For more reviews, check my Goodreads page, where everything is rated on a traditional 5/5 star basis.

I’m going to use my extra .5 of a star because I truly believe this book deserves all 10 stars. This is my first Jennifer Armentrout novel but I’m certain it won’t be my last. (The Dead List comes out in 2015 and I will get my paws on that book as soon as I can!!)
